How to Achieve that Basic Smoky Eye by Makeup Artist, Jenny Karl

As a working makeup artist in Los Angeles, I do a lot of red carpet, special event, and photo shoot makeup.  At least 90% of my clients are still asking for that basic smoky eye. It seems like it will never go out of style.  And honestly, even though my clients all look different (different skin color, eye color, eye shape, etc.), I most always use the same colors, tools, and techniques to give them that sexy, smoky eye that they desire. This is one of the most important how-to’s you will ever read.  Here is how you can achieve that basic smoky eye that all the celebs are and will be rockin’ for years to come!

Step 1: Eye primers are a relatively new product, but once you start to use it and see the results, you will never forget to apply it again.  Your shadows will not only apply smoother, but will last all day and night. If you are a tranquil sleeper, you will wake up with your eyes still completely in tact and although, I wouldn’t make a habit of doing that, it is an interesting experiment. Apply a shadow primer, like Luminizing Eye Primer by Bodyography, all over the eyelids to prep the eyes for color application and encourage longer wear. * Tip: Also apply an eye cream under the eyes, like all-natural Rose Eye Cream from http://www.ClearandSmoothSkin.com to brighten, hydrate, and tighten fine lines.

Step 2: After your primer is blended smooth, use a natural hair lid brush, like the crease brush from http://www.Jordanessentials.com, to apply a soft iridescent, neutral eye shadow, such as www.HerbsofGrace.com loose mineral eye shadow in Oatstraw, to your entire eyelid and under the brow for highlight. Also, a good rule of thumb is ‘Everything you do on top, also do on the bottom.’ Taking this champagne color under the eye as well with the same brush will give the eye balance.  And don’t worry, you can’t mess this up.  You can really pile this natural base and highlight color on without over doing it.

Step 3: Just on the ball of the eye (where the eye protrudes), apply a mid tone shadow in a neutral plumy brown, like MAC Shadow in Haux. Use a smaller shadow brush, like Kevyn Aucoin’s Small Eyeshadow Brush, and apply color exactly on the lid, also taking the color lightly under the eyes again with the same brush. This will not only give the eye balance, but also add a little more drama. Apply lightly at first and add more as needed until you get your desired color and depth.

Step 4: Three things to remember when applying the dark crease color- be patient, be precise, and blend. This is the hardest part so allow yourself some time for this step. Lightly and softly begin to apply an opaque black color, like Herbs of Grace eye shadow in Nightshade, to form your smoky crease.  Use the natural hair crease brush, to obtain the cleanest application and smoothest blending. Using a more precise angle brush, like Jordan Essential’s Eye Liner Brush, also bring the darker shadow under the bottom lashes to emphasize that sexy dramatic look. Be careful this time not to over do the black color under the eyes. It’s really easy to accidentally give yourself those dreaded raccoon eyes with this dark color.

Step 5: Now we are on to the eye liner. I know this seems like a lot of steps, but once you have it down, you will be able to do it with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back (well one hand at least). I have said it before, and I will say it again, black gel liner is the greatest invention since, well, I don’t know what. It’s just fabulous and has transformed the look and application of the smoky eye. Using a smooth black gel liner, like Mac’s Creme Pot Smudge Proof Liner in Black, gently trace around the entire inside edges of your eyes (the water line). Retrace if needed for more intensity. Then apply the liner softly on the top lid as close to lash line as possible, directing the line upwards toward the end of the eye. Blend out with the angle brush angling upwards at the end of the eye creating that cat’s eye effect. Keep adding and blending the liner until you achieve to your desired smokiness and sexy cat eye. But be quick because once this liner dries, there is no moving it around.

False Eyelashes

Don’t forget to curl your lashes and apply a coat or three of lengthening and thickening mascara, like Jordan Cosmetics Black Fiber Mascara, http://www.anessentialyou.com Long, thick, fluffy lashes will perfect this smoky eye look. Just add a bit of sheer gloss and you will be red carpet ready!

We all have a family member or friend who simply has everything and every year with the Holidays upon it is a struggle to find that perfect gift.

Kilian In the City of Sin/1.7 oz. 1.7oz $245.00 For the truly LUXE lady a new fragrance by the renowned Kilian Hennessey. In the City of Sin is a place of extreme temptation where every street corner offers the possibility of impromptu encounters and seductions. The fragrance opens with an explosion of Bergamote from Calabria, pink Peppercorns and Cardamom from Guatamala. It then evolves into a heart of Apricots and caramelized Plums held in check by the Turkish Rose Absolute. A light haze of Indonesian Incense entrances and then lends a profound depth, further sustained by Atlas and Virginia Cedar woods and rich Indonesian Patchouli. Needless to say a beautifully complex fragrance that comes in a stunning white enamel clutch wrapped with a golden snake. Fully seductive and fully luxurious!

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Make it up and make it personal with a hand picked selection of products for your lucky recipient. Mix and match a great set of eyes, lips, cheeks, and nails to give a customized set that is is both personal and her favorite gift.

I may be, well must be, somewhat biased but tenoverten’s WORTH $18.00 is one of my favorite nail polish colors of the season from the famous NYC salons tenoverten. The polish is both 5 FREE + CRUELTY FREE and lasts by using the best raw ingredients all compliant with the leaping bunny effort to encourage suppliers to also provide cruelty free ingredients. Not just in the finished product. Worth is currently featured in this month’s Marie Claire and is a truly gorgeous gold. Not too yellow and not glittery, an on-trend must-have metallic. Come December  tenoverten is also offering a discounted polish set for the Holidays for the true nail buff in your life… or if you’re recipient is in NYC go the extra mile and pick up a gift certificate for a little pampering.

Too-Faced Perfect Eyes Waterproof & Tearproof Eyeliner in Perfect Moss $18.00 This new liner is easy to apply and a perfect daytime green-gray color. Dark enough to create effect and make your eyes pop but still light enough to get a natural look. It’s also a great gift as application is easy, it glides on smoothly to get a clean line. Another great ‘eye’ gift is always a classic black mascara like Lancome Definicils $26.00.

Jouer Cheek Tint in Peony $20.00 The perfect cream blush to add a soft flush of pink to any winter blues.

Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar in Stalker $16.00 NY Based cult brand Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetic is not only 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free but this amazing product is a hybrid between a lip gloss and lipstick. Meaning it goes on like a gloss but then dries matte like a lipstick. A few other pros are that it lasts for hours (date night may be an exception), is highly pigmented, and comes in a range from subtle to super bright fun. Even colors like neon pink, blue, and orange. I’m not quite ready to be that experimental but a classic Hollywood red like Stalker or the new color Electric Grandma are safe bets to gift anytime of the year. And remember a little bit goes a long way so only use a tiny dab to start with.

Or for luscious lips try this UBER-LUXE lip set from iconic Gucci designer Tom Ford.  Hint: if anyone is looking for a gift idea for me then this is the one. Tom Ford Beauty 4 Piece Lip Color Boxed Gift Set $192.00 Colors include:Lip colors include Spanish Pink, Crimson Noir, Nude Vanille, & Wild Ginger giving a range from nude to show stopper.

Happy shopping and always remind yourself it’s the thought that counts not the dollar value. So, pick up a great gloss for a friend and she’ll smile right back at you while wearing it. xo

8 Holiday Makeup Do’s & Don’t

23 Nov

1. Don’t be afraid to try something new. If you’re not one for makeup, this holiday season add a touch of gold or bronze to your bottom lash line for an easy, fun holiday look.

2. Don’t worry about that summer sweat anymore! Find a foundation that is right for you…and the season. During the winter don’t be afraid to put away the tinted moisturizer and try a more full coverage foundation for a flawless long lasting winter look.

3. Do keep a nude gloss and an Elf Eye liner pen in your purse for a quick day to night change.

4. Don’t hesitate to go for a bold lip! If you use a liner and matte lipstick combo your touch ups are going to be minimal! Gloss alone works great, but it makes touching up more frequent. (Favorite tip, after eating completely take off lipstick and reapply. It will last longer than trying to touch up what’s left!)

5. Do give your skin a gorgeous glow. Just because it’s the winter doesn’t mean you can’t look sun kissed! A touch of MAC’s Give Me Sun right below your cheekbones, as a contour gives the perfect finish.

6. It’s winter; DON’T worry about washing your hair every day. That’s why dry shampoo was invented. Suave Dry Shampoo is $3.49. Pick up a bottle and make Saturday night drinks with the girl’s hair last into Sunday’s brunch with the boyfriends parents!

7. Don’t forget to add a touch of color on your cheeks when going for a bold lip. You don’t want the lip to wash you out. Try a mauve for evening and baby pink for day time and it will really make your face pop!

8. And last, but certainly not least, don’t forget to moisturize!! From your skin to your lips, try Maybelline’s Baby Lips chapstick for the lips; and L’Occitane 25% Shea butter face cream for night and day. (If your skin is on the oilier side, try Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer.)

Eyeko Fat Eye Stick in Satin Taupe

15 Oct

Light up your eyes with this amazing chubby eyeliner from Eyeko. Flattering on any skintone, the sheen it imparts on eyes is a show stopper. The fawn like color and smooth glossy application, will leave your eyes looking  luminous and well rested!

I also love the surprise retractable twist up applicator. It couldn’t be easier to take your eye makeup from a vibrant opaque finish, all the way to an ethereal sheer wash of color. You can also use this creamy stick to line your eyes,  with a cat eye flick at the ends, or use your fingers to smudge it on. So many liners claim to be bendable, but they require a game of tug of war on your delicate lids. This highly pigmented cream melts right in, staying malleable enough to get the color where you want it, while miraculously lasting for hours. But for best results, primer first is always the way to go for creaseless staying power.

But my favorite easiest, goof proof way to use it? Take a swipe or two over each lid, from the lash line to the crease or just a hint above the crease. Then grab your fluffy ponytail brush and with a windshield wiper motion, blend it out. Voila! Your eyes will instantly look bigger, brighter and beautifully defined. Smoky eyes in truly seconds.

Here’s a list of all their beautiful colors:

Favorite Beauty looks from New York Fashion Week Spring 2013

4 Oct

As we are only now, at least in LA, buying our select Fall items to add a little ‘oomph’ to our wardrobe, New York Fashion week, along with Paris and more, have already looked to Spring 2013. So even though I can’t wait to check out the new Rag & Bone store on Melrose to puruse Fall 2012 and break out my leathers, here are a couple of my favorite Beauty looks from NY Fashion week Spring 2013.

This tucked under the scarf, just woke up look has a natural sexy ease to it, sort of like wearing your boyfriends old t-shirt.  Of course it takes more effort than it looks but the slouchy messiness of it is great for cold weather and a hip ‘it’s that easy’ for me attitude.  Trust Proenza Schouler to pull this tussled look off using Fekkai Coiff Magnifique Ultra Light Finishing Crème

Brown it is! I love this softer look using brown eyeliner vs. harder blacks. I also love a good smokey grey.  But for day looks, a warmer feel, and a look that’s more flattering with lighter skin, steal this! Plus, it helps that Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Brown is a reasonable price.

MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry

4 Sep

Wanna pop those eyes? Make them really stand out? Want something less harsh than black, but with more oomph than brown? MAC’s Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry is just the ticket! An absolute staple for me and the number one reason for that is the color. An ever so-slightly shimmery gunmetal gray that leaves your eyes with gorgeous yet subtle definition.

Now, I know gray can sound boring but somehow MAC hits the ideal shade with this liner. My fave ways to use it? On and around the waterline. On the waterline, it just kicks up your eyes in a way that is breathtaking but never obvious. And great for smudging right below the waterline, for a more smoldering eye in seconds.

Not sure if I agree with MAC’s claims that Industry is waterproof, but its got very respectable staying power. I do find that it can smudge a bit after hours of wear. But that won’t stop me from using this daily. The color makes this pencil’s few drawbacks obsolete!

Nars Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Aigle Noir

9 Aug

Aigle Noir means Black Eagle. Which makes me love this pencil even more. It applies like a dream. Literally glides on. You can build the intensity with additional strokes and easily soften the line by blending it out. Shape it into a tighter line with a q-tip. Smudge it all over your lid. Or use it as a base for traditional eye shadow. In one quick stroke, it gives you done eyes! A go-to for both a soft halo of light around my lash line or a bolder more dramatic eye.

And the color! The color is this decadent bronzey golden flecked black. Now, I hate to call it a soft grease pencil, for fear that it will scare people off. But it kinda is. Yet it never gets messy. You can clean up any mishaps so easily and yet it has great wear power. A luscious find!

Tips:

Start with an eyelid primer or some shadow to be sure this soft pencil stays put. It’s worth the extra step. I promise.
