Radical Skincare Age Defying Exfoliating Pads

Radical Age Defying Exfoliating Pads

OK! If ya do the math, these come out to $1.25 an exfoliating pad. A lot, I know! But isn’t $1.25 well-spent, better than the endless ineffectual products we clutter our medicine cabinets with?

I received these Age Defying Exfoliating Pads in my SpaceNK gift bag over a year ago, and the addiction continues. This product is a super power. 86% Active Ingredients? How refreshing! Glycolic Acid,  and Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids exfoliate skin for a smooth flawless finish. Cellular turnover? Check! Shrinking pores? Check! And Oat Kernel and Chamomile calm it all for a gorgeous glow with zero dehydration. Skin is buffed, brightened, strengthened, and de-creased. All in one step, thanks to these cotton discs.

Perfect for the lazy and perfect for the meticulous! Thanks SpaceNK for adding one more pricey yet must-have to my list.

Celeb Fav Bio-Oil: Just Hype or Heavenly?

Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 8.32.55 PM

Bio-Oil is coined as specialist skincare for scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, ageing, and dehydrated skin. And, more recently Kim Kardashian revealed it as her secret weapon that she’ll be using throughout her pregnancy to keep stretch marks (and wrinkles) at bay. It is also reported to be  favored by celebs such as Natalie Portman and Rochelle Humes. So, why all the hype about this “miracle” oil?

The key ingredient is PurCellin Oil. PurCellin is not a single ingredient, it is a delivery system which reduces the overall thickness of the substance and helps Bio-Oil absorb easily into the skin, which in my opinion, it does well. The product may be called an oil and look greasy but it does in fact absorb super well, leaving a light sheen but not a greasy, slimy feel (unless of course, you over apply), But, just to be clear, PurCellin Oil™ is a laboratory recreation (man made) of the preen gland oil of ducks, and acts as the delivery system for Bio Oils other ingredients.

It is also a non-acnegenic product, can be used on sensitive skin and is hypo allergenic. Made up of a mix of plant oil and vitamins, Bio-Oil helps moisturize and enhance the skin to its fullest. It relieves dry skin, helps soothe after sun exposure, and can be used in the bath. In fact, one of my favorite ways to use it is in the bath for general hydration. For healing it is recommended to be used twice daily for a min. of 3 months.

As I’m not pregnant, nor am I using it for stretch marks, I cannot speak directly to those claims. But, I can give my personal opinion to claims of hydration and skin tone. After using it only for a few days a dear friend touched my arm and immediately remarked how soft my skin felt, loved it!

I also noticed the skin on my legs was looking more even, not as red. I’ve started to dab a little bit around my eyes for moisture and fine lines and so far, no breakouts, and good results. I’m hesitant to apply it all over my face because of break outs but I’ll let you know if I dare go there. Until then, I have to say for my purposes, Bio-Oil is pretty heavenly!

My only warning for those who are super conscious about ingredients is that Bio-Oil does contain paraffin or mineral oil in it. Paraffin is a solid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum which does raise a flag for some people however, it is considered a low overall hazard and permitted by the FDA for use as as an ophthalmic emollient. Alcone Non-Latex Make-Up Sponges

Alcone-s-Non-Latex-Sponges_productfull

Does latex irritate your skin? Would you rather not chance it? Alcone Non-Latex Make-Up Sponges are the perfect solution.

This is a discovery that I have to credit my sister-in-law with. These velvety staples are water-based, making blending out shadows or applying foundation a joy. You’ll end up using less product since they won’t soak all the water out of your makeup.  And they’re washable and biodegradable, with zero yellowing and no crumbling. These wedges are anything but flimsy. It’s no wonder they are an In Style magazine and industry favorite.

Available for $2.50 for 8 sponges:

How to Achieve that Basic Smoky Eye by Makeup Artist, Jenny Karl

4411058-woman-s-eye-with-bright-fashion-make-up-and-black-false-eyelashes

As a working makeup artist in Los Angeles, I do a lot of red carpet, special event, and photo shoot makeup.  At least 90% of my clients are still asking for that basic smoky eye. It seems like it will never go out of style.  And honestly, even though my clients all look different (different skin color, eye color, eye shape, etc.), I most always use the same colors, tools, and techniques to give them that sexy, smoky eye that they desire. This is one of the most important how-to’s you will ever read.  Here is how you can achieve that basic smoky eye that all the celebs are and will be rockin’ for years to come!

Step 1: Eye primers are a relatively new product, but once you start to use it and see the results, you will never forget to apply it again.  Your shadows will not only apply smoother, but will last all day and night. If you are a tranquil sleeper, you will wake up with your eyes still completely in tact and although, I wouldn’t make a habit of doing that, it is an interesting experiment. Apply a shadow primer, like Luminizing Eye Primer by Bodyography, all over the eyelids to prep the eyes for color application and encourage longer wear. * Tip: Also apply an eye cream under the eyes, like all-natural Rose Eye Cream from http://www.ClearandSmoothSkin.com to brighten, hydrate, and tighten fine lines.

Step 2: After your primer is blended smooth, use a natural hair lid brush, like the crease brush from http://www.Jordanessentials.com, to apply a soft iridescent, neutral eye shadow, such as www.HerbsofGrace.com loose mineral eye shadow in Oatstraw, to your entire eyelid and under the brow for highlight. Also, a good rule of thumb is ‘Everything you do on top, also do on the bottom.’ Taking this champagne color under the eye as well with the same brush will give the eye balance.  And don’t worry, you can’t mess this up.  You can really pile this natural base and highlight color on without over doing it.

Step 3: Just on the ball of the eye (where the eye protrudes), apply a mid tone shadow in a neutral plumy brown, like MAC Shadow in Haux. Use a smaller shadow brush, like Kevyn Aucoin’s Small Eyeshadow Brush, and apply color exactly on the lid, also taking the color lightly under the eyes again with the same brush. This will not only give the eye balance, but also add a little more drama. Apply lightly at first and add more as needed until you get your desired color and depth.

Step 4: Three things to remember when applying the dark crease color- be patient, be precise, and blend. This is the hardest part so allow yourself some time for this step. Lightly and softly begin to apply an opaque black color, like Herbs of Grace eye shadow in Nightshade, to form your smoky crease.  Use the natural hair crease brush, to obtain the cleanest application and smoothest blending. Using a more precise angle brush, like Jordan Essential’s Eye Liner Brush, also bring the darker shadow under the bottom lashes to emphasize that sexy dramatic look. Be careful this time not to over do the black color under the eyes. It’s really easy to accidentally give yourself those dreaded raccoon eyes with this dark color.

Step 5: Now we are on to the eye liner. I know this seems like a lot of steps, but once you have it down, you will be able to do it with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back (well one hand at least). I have said it before, and I will say it again, black gel liner is the greatest invention since, well, I don’t know what. It’s just fabulous and has transformed the look and application of the smoky eye. Using a smooth black gel liner, like Mac’s Creme Pot Smudge Proof Liner in Black, gently trace around the entire inside edges of your eyes (the water line). Retrace if needed for more intensity. Then apply the liner softly on the top lid as close to lash line as possible, directing the line upwards toward the end of the eye. Blend out with the angle brush angling upwards at the end of the eye creating that cat’s eye effect. Keep adding and blending the liner until you achieve to your desired smokiness and sexy cat eye. But be quick because once this liner dries, there is no moving it around.

False Eyelashes

Don’t forget to curl your lashes and apply a coat or three of lengthening and thickening mascara, like Jordan Cosmetics Black Fiber Mascara, http://www.anessentialyou.com Long, thick, fluffy lashes will perfect this smoky eye look. Just add a bit of sheer gloss and you will be red carpet ready!

Burning Desire: Candle Wish List

Screen shot 2012-12-13 at 10.10.36 AMAs a self acknowledged candle junkie I have tried and tried many a candle. And, many with great results. I’ve already written about my love for Diptyque’s Baies candles, a classic for year round, and now the Diptyque Holiday Collection $32.00 – $68.00  This limited edition Holiday collection is packaged in elegant lovely containers decorated with a replica of a hand-drawn design which gives off a beautiful colored light when burning.   The collection is a range of 3 candles Sapin Doré paying homage to the fir tree, Amber Oud  reminiscent of an Oriental journey filled with rare spices, and Oliban transporting you to an Arabian dream highlighting resin frankincense.

For a better price point, still not bargain basement deals, I also love Voluspa’s Champagne Rose $24.00 or the Grande 3 wick versions for $60.00. The Grande version ha a 120 hour burn time and is beautiful on a table with a triple wick being burnt. It also smells divine with notes of rose champagne, cassis berries, and white rose petals. This scent really fills the room but is not too overwhelming. I like to light the Grande size when having guests over to create a nice warm ambiance.

Every time I burn Restoration Hardware’s French Oak candle $39.00 – $49.00 EVERYONE asks what it is and remarks how much they love it, it is Herbes de Provence mingled with purple iris, white oak and a hint of smoky wood. Totally enveloping and the packaging is stunning for gifting! The candle comes is 3 sizes packaged in the wooden box which I now use on my desk filled with pens and colored pencils.

And last but not least, Patch NYC OWL Candle $37.00 When I saw these candles I was drawn in by the vintage-inspired packaging and old world feel. Then for a double do good, the candles are 100 percent soy with a 72 hour burn time. The labels on the front of these candles are silhouettes of different animals and the owl scent is an earthy scent of sandalwood, tobacco and vetiver – perfect for a winter vibe. I also recommend the STAG candle with the scent of siberian fir that is fresh but not overpowering, thanks to light notes of citrus and raspberry.
