BY TERRY Baume de Rose

By Terry Baume de Rose

Who wants to spend $59 on a lip balm? Certainly, not I. So how did it happen? Well, it all began when I was leaving my beloved Barneys Love Yourself Beauty Event and I passed the By Terry counter. I was almost out the door when I thought to myself, I keep reading and hearing endlessly about this balm, let me just try a swipe so I can stop wondering. And that was the beginning of the end.

The BY TERRY Baume De Rose is much to my dismay, GLORIOUS!  One application lasts for hours on end, eliminating the need to reapply endlessly. Lips are truly hydrated, not just coated. And the SPF 15 filled pale pink sheen pluses your natural lip color. It’s plumping, creating the illusion of fuller lips, and it makes a great base for keeping lipstick in place. Suprisingly, it also doubles as a cuticle cream. But let’s face it! There’s no way I’m going to waste it on my hands unless I scooped too much on my lips.

The only thing I’m not a fan of is dipping my finger in to apply it. There is a lip gloss version of it but it does contain less product.  Beside, I wouldn’t want to give up pulling out this gorgeous jar  to apply it. The whole experience of using this somehow feels sensorially fulfilling. The heaviness of the jar, the heavenly rose scent, the substantial consistency, and the resulting baby soft lips. Now if your not a fan of roses, you might be a little less impressed but otherwise, this lip balm is sadly a delightfully luxurious experience. No wonder, it’s a cult classic!

From the By Terry site:

– A lipo-regenerating complex made up of Rose Flower Essential Wax with softening and astringent properties, Pastel Oil to boost cell renewal, and Shea Butter with healing and soothing benefits, supplies strength, nutrition and comfort.- The Hydroskin complex, a combination of filling spheres and active ingredients of lipid origin, provides optimal hydration.- Biotechnological ceramides deliver youthfulness and density thanks to their restructuring and firming action and their smoothing effect.

– Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, and Sun Protection Factor 15 protect the lips against the harmful effects of light and help to fight against aging.

Chapped Lip Care: Why & How To Heal

15 Nov

We experience chapped lips all year round due to cold and dry weather, insufficient or lack of nutrients (vitamin B), smoking, improper diet or even medications or thyroid hormone imbalance can cause chapped lips. But, with the cold upon us it becomes a much more common problem and we need a little extra cold weather care for our sensitive puckers. Lips are the most vulnerable to drying out as we lose up to 10 times the moisture through our lips than anywhere else on the face or body. Lips are mucous membranes so they have very thin surface layers of skin on them which isn’t good for winter lip lock.

Here are a few reasons WHY & HOW lips chap and how to best help the problem.

1. Do not exfoliate your lips! If you are it can break down the thin layers of skin you do have on them.

2. Pick perfect lip product! Some lip products actually have drying ingredients such as scented lip gloss or plumpers. Cinnamates, which create the scent can easily irritate the skin so try a fragrance-free gloss. Also keep an eye out for ieucalyptus, menthol, and camphor which can also cause irritation and dryness.

3. Not all lip balms are alike! Wax based balms have less protection so choose a petroleum based treatment like Aquaphor Healing Ointment $4.79 Petrolatum is one of the most common occlusive agents, but you can also look for castor seed oil, shea butter, sunflower seed oil, or squalane to nourish cracked lips. Plus look for an SPF lip balm such as Aveeno Lip Conditioner Essential Moisture SPF 15 $3.70 or Blistex Lip Infusion SPF 15 $2.75.

4. Avoid using products daily that come in little pots as dipping your finger in a jar isn’t as sanitary as using a tube applicator.

5. Do not lick or bite your lips! People tend to bite and lick their lips when they’re stressed, causing them to get even dryer. “As saliva evaporates, it dehydrates skin further,” Linder tells WebMD. “Saliva also contains acids that help break down food. Those acids only cause irritation when sitting on compromised lip skin, Linder says.

6. Sleep slathered!  One of the keys to avoiding cracked lips is to apply balm early and often so when we sleep we loose a window of opportunity. Try wearing a thick layer of ointment to bed. “Many of us sleep with our mouths open, causing our lips to dry out.” Applying a treatment at bedtime means you’ll be less likely to wake up with chapping.” Los Angeles dermatologist Jessica Wu, MD  Try Neosporin Lip Health Overnight Renewal Therapy. $4.99

7. Cold Weather blitz. Protect your lips like yourself with a scarf in cold weather. You can’t walk around with a face mask but you can create a barrier between the cold and your lips by always wearing a lip balm and trying to not let your lips go bare.

Jao Lip Balm

3 Sep

New and improved 100% NATURAL lip Jao with the tag line, “Specially formulated for lip balm snobs”, should read “specially formulated for all”. Jao is made with 34% shea butter, is a long lasting petro-chemical free formula, and contains lysine, calendula and chamomile oil extracts. The new formula does not claim an SPF rating of 15 as the old formula did, more like an SPF 8, but it’s therefore more accurate (See more details on the SPF rating below). And to top it off the company was started by a Father & daughter team, amazing, in Pennsylvania where all the products are formulated without dyes, petroleum or artificial fragrances.

It’s non-greasy and when my lips are particularly chapped I even put a light layer under my lipstick. I say light because due to the Zinc Oxide it does leave your lips a bit white. Just go easy on the application. I also like to put it on before I go to bed for an overnight chapped lip healer.

Check out all of the amazing natural ingredients notably rosehip and jojoba which are rich in vitamins A, E, and C.

INGREDIENTS: Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter, Candelilla Wax, Beeswax, Pumpkin Seed Butter, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Castor Oil, Rosehip Oil, Jojoba Oil, Zinc Oxide (Non Nano Uncoated), Sea Buckthorn, Vitamin E Acetate, Propolis, Rosemary Extract, Chamomile Oil, Calendula Oil, essential oils of: Tea Tree Oil, Anise Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Palmarosa Oil

From Jao Ltd website: *Our LipJao™ is not SPF rated because the FDA has made it difficult (expensive) for small companies to test. Since our focus as a company is to make 100% natural products, we did not want to make a chemical sunscreen anymore. Instead, we reformulated our LipJaoto include 34% Shea Butter as well as meadowfoam seed oil which both have a natural sunscreen property. We also did not want to make a pure white lip balm so added just 4% Zinc Oxide which IS, in fact, sunscreen. While we cannot claim a definite SPF number, we can approximate that LipJao’s rating is SPF-8.

Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15

23 Aug

When it comes to lips sometimes I want just a tint of color, a sheer wash to add a youthful glow.  Not a gloss, not a crème lipstick, and no liner. Just a beautiful shiny tint and that is exactly what Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatments provide. Plus they have the added benefit of having an SPF 15 and nourishing treatment.

Pure pigment, pure shine, pure luxury: this intensely-hued, super lustrous lip gloss is formulated with active ingredients that hydrate and restore lips for an immediately soft and smooth effect.

  • HYDRATING FORMULA KEEPS LIPS FROM CRACKING OR CHAPPING
  • ADDED SUPERANTIOXIDANT VITAMIN E PROTECTS THE LIPS FROM DAMAGING ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
  • WEARS ALONE OR LAYERS OVER LIPSTICK AND LINER TO IMPART SHINE

PARABEN-, SULFATE- AND PHTHALATE-FREE

My favorite color is Plum, which uses buildable coverage for either a sheer or deeper hue to turn it into a nighttime look. All the colors build but Plum has rich blue undertones which seems the most universally flattering of the darker colors. Days I don’t want to look overdone I will do a wash of Plum and some mascara. I have to admit I still pretty much always curl my lashes first as it’s the biggest no-make up tip that makes the biggest difference.

Tips to application – I do find myself having to smooth over the color on my lips with my finger when I apply it and occasionally once it’s on to keep it from blotting in any dry areas. If my lips are already too dry or chapped I prefer to go with a clear lip treatment as the tint can cake into the chapped areas.

Key ingredients:

– Sugar, a natural humectant, prevents moisture loss

– A superior blend of nourishing oils, including meadowfoam and black currant seed oils, deeply moisturize dry areas

– Grapeseed polyphenols protect, smooth, and soften

– SPF 15 UVA/UVB protection

For a cheaper version of a tinted lip treatment check out NIVEA A Kiss of Cherry Tinted Lip Care SPF10. They are a fraction of the price at $0.99! My only reservation is they are flavored so depending on if you like fruity tasting balm it may or may not be a good fit for you. However, the formula has great moisture and gives you a nice make-out session cherry hue to your lips…. Luscious!

Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Peach Parfait

14 Aug

This super affordable lipstick/lip balm by Revlon is a delicious peachy coral pink that is extremely flattering on most skin tones. I hesitate to say shimmer or glitter since it can imply an 80s frosted look and that can be a big turn-off, but the effect here is a natural hydrated voluminous lip.

Now, while it is very moisturizing, I wouldn’t necessarily call it buttery like the name indicates. The texture can feel a tad grainy going on but luckily, the results are enviable. A perfect pout: high non-glossy shine, the look of fuller lips, and a brightening effect for  the whole face. It’s so good, I actually have a backup supply in case it’s ever discontinued.

Tips:
Apply it gently. The lipstick can get smushed if you swipe it with a bit too much force.
It’s also very buildable. One swipe is sheer-ish. Multiple swipes get increasingly opaque!
You will have to reapply every couple of hours…but it’s so worth it.

From the Revlon site:

– Hydrating mango, shea and coconut butter formula boosts lip moisture by 156%

– Pampering gel formula provides super charged hydration and glides on lips buttery smooth
