“Know It All: Brush Edition” by MakeUp Artist, Elle Favorule

9 Nov

My two biggest pet peeves revolve around makeup application. Don’t use your fingers, and don’t buy cheap brushes. (I didn’t say inexpensive, I said cheap!) It’s all in the way it’s applied. You are never going to get a flawless finish if you are applying foundation with your fingers! Now, it’s not just about me trying to sell you on brushes… Applying with your fingers is also not the sanitary.

So, to make your life easier, and your face flawless here are my top 3 brushes, how to use them and what they are for. (You can pretty much do your entire face start to finish with them!)

1. Duo Fiber Face Brush- Multi use face application brush. I prefer to use this brush for foundation but it works well for blush or bronzer. This brush allows you to see any lines and streaks where the foundation isn’t blended and makes it easy to correct. A great tip for dry skin is to use the brush to apply moisturizer before and between, as touch ups. The residual foundation on the brush mixes with moisturizer for a great finish.

2. MAC #217- This brush is the one brush I MUST HAVE in my kit! Your smoky eye will never be the same. This is the perfect combination of a blending brush and an application brush for eye shadow.  I love this brush for any application of color in your crease. Whether you are doing the outer most corners of your eyes, the lash line, or the crease, the 217 applies and blends perfectly. The trick to this brush, just make sure to tap off excess powder!

3. Blender (fluff) brush- (Duo fiber or real hair) Blender brushes are commonly used to blend harsh edges or color for eye shadow. This fluffy brush doesn’t stop at the eyes. My beauty trick for this bad boy is concealer! After the foundation is applied I like to use the blender brushes to apply concealer, under the eyes and all over the face. The brush allows a light touch of color but with great coverage. It helps to blend the concealer effortlessly into the foundation.

*Makeup Brush Steals and Deals*

My top two spots for discounts on brushes are online.

Hautelook.com and Groupon.com

They are not available all the time, but if you sign up you will get email notifications for the sales. They sell brushes individually for great prices but the steals are really in their sets. My most recent purchase was for 3 brush sets (all come with brush rolls and carrying cases.) I spent $69 but I saved $147. Can’t beat that bargain!

MAC Face & Body Pressed Pigments – in Warming Heart

22 Oct

I have loved the that almost wet eyelid look for years, and while I’ve tried the old vaseline trick, it always got messy. Until I met me these new Pressed Pigment’s by MAC. These super pigmented pearlescent shades deliver an unbelievably lustrous wet shine. But because they come in skin tone colors, the effect becomes soft and radiant when they melt into your skin. But proceed with caution, in no way is this meant to be an I’m-not-wearing-makeup look. But if that high gleam eye is what your after, these will deliver.  They can also be applied wet for added intensity. My personal favorite is Warming Heart for a soft peachy caramel color.

Now, while these were created for use all over the body, I would not recommend that. The only place I find them believable and not messy, is on the lid. And please, do not use them as a face highlighter, even if MAC seems to think this is a good idea. You will be disappointed at the overly glittery obvious shine! But if  a sexy, luminous, wet, shimmery eye look is your goal, go grab one of these colors fast.  They’re limited edition.

MAC Fix +

Want a more polished finished look? Want you makeup to stay on longer?  Reinvigorate it after a long day? Or maybe you want to just add a little extra glowy radiance?

Well, thanks to MAC, this vitamin and mineral infused spray does it all! Spray it at least 6 inches from your face to freshen up your skin or makeup with some extra skin softening hydration.

But my favorite function is a subtle but impactful one. It makes my makeup look not only polished but more natural, for hours on end! I lightly spray it on and then use a sponge to blot it and work it in. The results are set makeup that doesn’t look like I’m wearing makeup anymore. Foundation looks dewy, not cakey. Cheeks look radiant and healthy. And it also doubles as a great mister for generally refreshing and fortifying your skin.

MAC Fix + is obsession worthy for goof proof and flawless makeup!

Plus, it comes in a handy travel size!

From the MAC site:

An aqua-spritz of vitamin and minerals, infused with a calm-the-skin blend of green tea, chamomile, cucumber, topped off with the fresh, natural, energizing scent of Sugi. Adds radiance, finishes makeup. Spray it on. Skin drinks it up!

Ingredients:

Water, glycerin, butylene glycol, cucumber fruit extract, chamomilla, camellia leaf extract, tocophryl acetate, caffeine, panthenol, hydrogenated castor oil, fragrance

MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry

4 Sep

Wanna pop those eyes? Make them really stand out? Want something less harsh than black, but with more oomph than brown? MAC’s Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Industry is just the ticket! An absolute staple for me and the number one reason for that is the color. An ever so-slightly shimmery gunmetal gray that leaves your eyes with gorgeous yet subtle definition.

Now, I know gray can sound boring but somehow MAC hits the ideal shade with this liner. My fave ways to use it? On and around the waterline. On the waterline, it just kicks up your eyes in a way that is breathtaking but never obvious. And great for smudging right below the waterline, for a more smoldering eye in seconds.

Not sure if I agree with MAC’s claims that Industry is waterproof, but its got very respectable staying power. I do find that it can smudge a bit after hours of wear. But that won’t stop me from using this daily. The color makes this pencil’s few drawbacks obsolete!

Glowy Skin is a Highlighter Away!

27 Aug

There is almost nothing I love more than glowy skin! It emanates health, vitality, and well-being! Besides honoring the all-important hydration quotient and diligent sun-blocking, a great highlighter can be your skin’s best friend! The light will catch those highlighted points beautifully,  imparting dimension to the skin and a luminous sheen!

A subtle but effective highlighter is the iconic YSL Touche Éclat. You can use it to emphasize favorite features or conceal shadows. Skin goes from looking tired and sallow to radiant and energized.

Key Highlighting points:
Draw a line down the bridge of your nose (but not the tip), brow bone (eye lift illusion), tear ducts (bigger brighter, more-wellrested eyes), underneath the eye (banish those dark circles), across the top of your cheekbones (cheekbone enhancement, face lift illusion), and around the center of the outer top lip and the outer bottom lip (for a fuller pout). Then gently pat pat pat until they are well-blended. The line down the bridge of the nose is also a great trick to make your nose look straighter and more narrow. Highlighter is best saved as the last part of your makeup regiment, except for the under-eyes, which should be done before your concealer.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Lumi Highlighter
